About The Sill

The Sill is a modern plant company built on a simple belief: plants make people happy. Founded in New York City in 2012 by Eliza Blank, The Sill was created to make it easier for people to bring plants into their homes and discover the joy of caring for them.

Where It Started

The idea for The Sill began when founder Eliza Blank moved into her first apartment in New York City. The space felt bare and unfamiliar, and she wanted to bring more life and greenery into her home.

Her mother, an immigrant from the Philippines with a lifelong passion for gardening and houseplants, encouraged Eliza to bring plants into her apartment. Eliza quickly discovered how much having plants around her changed the feeling of her space and her own connection to it.

That personal experience became the foundation for The Sill: a company dedicated to connecting more people with plants and helping them experience the positive role greenery can play in everyday life.

Making Plants More Accessible

When The Sill launched in 2012, buying houseplants in an urban environment was not always easy. Traditional nurseries and garden centers were not necessarily designed for people living in apartments or for first-time plant owners.

The Sill set out to change that by creating a more approachable way to discover, purchase, and care for houseplants. What began in a small borrowed office space in New York City has grown into an online plant destination, a retail business, educational platform, and community for plant parents.

Plants, Planters, and More

The Sill offers a wide variety of indoor plants as well as planters, pots, plant-care supplies, gifts, dried arrangements, and other products designed to bring nature into the home.

The company works directly with growers to select its plant assortment, while its plant experts care for plants before they are potted, packaged, and shipped to customers.

The collection is designed for different levels of experience, from easy-care plants for beginners to more distinctive varieties for experienced plant enthusiasts.

Helping People Become Better Plant Parents

The Sill believes that choosing the right plant is only the beginning. Learning how to care for a living plant can be just as important.

That's why education has always been part of the company's mission. The Sill provides plant-care resources, guides, online learning opportunities, workshops, and approachable advice designed to help people understand their plants and feel more confident caring for them.

The company also emphasizes judgment-free customer service. Whether someone is purchasing their first houseplant or already has an established indoor garden, The Sill aims to provide guidance and support throughout the experience.

Growing a Community

Plants are more than products at The Sill. They are a way for people to connect with nature, create more inviting spaces, and build small daily rituals around caring for something living.

Over the years, The Sill has developed a community of plant parents through its online platform, retail stores, workshops, events, and educational content. The company has also supported community initiatives that bring plants and plant education to underserved communities.

A Thoughtful Approach to Sustainability

The Sill continues to explore ways to reduce its environmental impact. Its sustainability efforts have included working with manufacturers focused on reducing environmental impact, introducing planters made with upcycled materials, reducing plastic in packaging, removing single-use materials from distribution operations, and using carbon-neutral shipping for the majority of its packages.

The company also works with independent makers and brands whose products align with its aesthetic and values.

Our Mission

At The Sill, we believe that bringing plants into everyday spaces can make those spaces feel more alive and can create opportunities to slow down, care for something, and reconnect with nature.

From its beginnings in a small New York City office to a growing community of plant lovers, The Sill remains committed to making plants more approachable and helping people succeed as plant parents.

Our mission is simple: to bring plants into more people's lives, provide the knowledge and support needed to help them thrive, and create a community where everyone can experience the joy of growing.
